Sometimes the argument is made that Christians are not very aware and awake to the issues of our times. Some people think that Jesus was unaware of the challenging issues that we wrestle with in our era, and, to be a follower of Jesus is to go to sleep to the most important challenges of living together with others. Look again. Jesus was awake to the same sorts of issues we have now. Jesus was awake to our tendency to dismiss one another on the basis of race, age, or other differences. Jesus was awake to the conflict and power struggle between men and women. Jesus was awake to the way politics can take over our lives. No, Jesus was very much awake. To get closer to Jesus is to grow in conscious awareness of the problems of our world—and also, to begin to see the solution. Come awake with Jesus.
