Turn Again

The most remarkable promise of Christianity is that by turning to Christ, one can find an entirely new way of life. New life. The old is gone. The new has come. Christianity is not about adding some new information or helpful habits to an otherwise relatively successful course of life; it is about moving from death to true life. Jesus did not come to make good people better; He came to make dead people come to life. This is conversion. A total and complete transformation. Jesus can offer this radical change because He Himself died on the cross and rose again. Theologian Luis Berkhof described conversion this way: “True conversion is born of godly sorrow, and issues in a life of devotion to God, 2 Cor. 7:10. It is a change that is rooted in the work of regeneration, and that is effected in the conscious life of the sinner by the Spirit of God; a change of thoughts and opinions, of desires and volitions, which involves the conviction that the former direction of life was unwise and wrong and alters the entire course of life.” (Luis Berkhof, Systematic Theology) Conversion has two components: repentance and faith. Repentance looks back with sorrow over the past; faith looks forward with promise for the future. It is described as a turning around, a repentance, and an opening up of the eyes and senses to a new world. Jesus offers conversion, new life, turning again.
