Prayer Shawl Ministry
The prayer shawl ministry at First Pres is comprised of a handful of members who meet once a week on Thursday afternoon to create shawls in connection with someone from Caring Ministries who delivers a shawl to someone in need of emotional support. Knit & Chat’s purpose is a heartfelt endeavor that combines knitting or crocheting with prayers to create tangible gifts of comfort, healing and love. The shawls in turn are given to individuals facing serious illness, injury, grief or spiritual upheaval offering solace and support in their time of need. When a person wraps the shawl around themselves, it is hoped that they will feel comforted, loved and encouraged knowing that others are praying for them. This ministry is a testament to the importance of praying for others, even strangers.
The act of knitting or crocheting provides an opportunity for community connection and support. The act and praying together creates a sense of unity and purpose, reminding us that we are all connected and can offer support to one another. Each prayer shawl is a unique and personal creation. The process of selecting the yarn, choosing the pattern and creating with care brings a sense of purpose and joy to the knitter or crocheter.
There are no age requirements for being a member of Knit & Chat. We use our time and God-given talent to create shawls in a desire to help others. The prayer shawl ministry began in the late 1990’s in the United States and the group here at First Pres began in the 2010’s. We average 50 shawls a year with the cost of yarn used for each project being the creator’s financial contribution to the ministry. Church members are encouraged to donate financial gifts or unwanted yarn for the support of this caring mission.
