Salt

Jesus spent a lot of time training his disciples to expect to stand out in the world. The world, he said, will not fully understand you. In fact, the world will malign you and think ill of you. You will not be like those around you. How do you recognize and accept the difference but also stay in contact with the world as an agent of change and healthy influence? The image Jesus gave was of salt. Salt preserves what it touches. Salt enhances the good flavor of what it touches. Salt, when taken in, makes a person thirsty. What is it like to be a Christian in a non-Christian world? At work, at school, with family and friends, the way to be salt is to exercise what is called “faithful presence.” You don’t have to dominate; you have to participate, but as a faithful and present believer. Don’t lose your saltiness. The Sermon on the Mount teaches us how to stand out for good in a world gone bad.
